What can happen if you leave Gout untreated?

Gouty tophi are the result of long-term untreated gout, a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. When uric acid levels in the blood become elevated, the crystals deposit in various tissues, forming tophi. Tophi typically develop in cooler areas of the body, such as the fingers, toes, elbows, and ears, where temperature variations promote crystal formation. These small, firm, and whitish nodules are composed of uric acid crystals surrounded by inflammatory tissue. Gouty tophi can cause joint deformities, chronic pain, and restricted mobility, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive gout management.
