Osgood-Schlatter syndrome is a common cause of knee pain among growing adolescents. It’s an inflammation of the area just below the knee where the patellar tendon attaches to the shinbone. It’s often seen in those experiencing a growth spurt or engaging heavily in sports.
Interestingly, poor foot mechanics can contribute to the progression and recovery time of this syndrome. Misaligned feet can place additional stress on the knee, prolonging the healing process. To aid recovery, we often recommend high-quality custom orthotics, which can correct foot imbalances and alleviate undue stress on the knee.
The good news? Osgood-Schlatter syndrome usually resolves itself as the child finishes growing. However, managing pain, resting, and modifying physical activities, in addition to addressing foot mechanics, are key to a quicker recovery.
