Fungal Skin Infections

Tinea Pedis affects the skin on the feet and is caused by fungus. Also known as Athlete’s Foot, Tinea pedis commonly affects the areas between the toes and the bottoms of the feet. It can inflame the skin and cause a white, scaly rash with a red base. Other symptoms include itching, burning, peeling, and sometimes a slight odour.

Athlete’s Foot can be transmitted easily to other people via shared floors, gym mats, towels, and other surfaces so it needs to be treated as soon as you notice it.

There are three main types of Tinea Pedis:

Vesicular Tinea Pedis

Characteristics: pustules or vesicles around the arch of the foot.

Interdigital Tinea Pedis

Characteristics: are interdigital inflammation, odour, fissures, and maceration.

Moccasin Tinea Pedis

Characteristics: are red, dry, scaly skin on the sole and around the sides of the foot.

A podiatrist can help you pinpoint the best treatment for your particular type of athlete’s foot and can also help if the infection has spread to your nails.
