Schools shoes

Choosing the correct footwear for your child is very important. During the early years, babies’ and toddlers’ feet are soft and pliable and if inappropriate footwear is worn for long periods it may result in damage that could lead to foot problems later in life.

We know the back-to-school period is an expensive and stressful time for parents – expensive does not always mean quality. Our lead podiatrists’ top tips for selecting and fitting shoes on a budget:

  • Measure both feet as most children and adults may have one foot slightly wider or longer than the other.
  • Ensure your child’s toes have wiggle room, toes should be able to move and wiggle freely in the toe box.
  • There should be a child’s thumb width between the end of the longest toe and the end of the shoe.
  • The widest part of the shoe should correspond with the widest part of the shoe.
  • Laces or velcro shoes when fastened should hold the heel firmly in the back of the shoe.
  • The heel cup of the shoe should fit around the child’s heel comfortably while also being strong and stable.
  • The sole or mid part of the shoe should not bend or twist.
  • The shoe should bend at the toe box but shouldn’t bend anywhere else.
  • When it comes to ‘hand me downs’, bear in mind that worn shoes have molded into the shape of the previous child’s foot and may cause foot problems for your child.
  • Avoid slip-on shoes. Shoes with Velcro, laces, or buckles can be adjusted to ensure a snug fit whereas slip-on shoes may cause your child to clench their toes to keep their shoes on which may cause pain and foot problems.
  • Plimsolls have been a school staple but they offer little support and do not offer half-sizes or varying widths, therefore, it is difficult to get a good fit.
  • Socks and tights must not be too tight as tight-fitting hosiery may restrict growing toes or cause ingrown toenails.
  • Avoid footwear with synthetic lining as this may cause excessive sweating.
  • Runners are usually foot-friendly as long as they are fitted properly and have the qualities above.

It’s always recommended to have your child’s feet measured by a professional.
