Toenail reconstruction

The technique involves using a gel designed specifically for reconstruction, to build a more aesthetically pleasing nail that can then be painted or gel polished. Toenail reconstruction usually lasts between 4 and 8 weeks although this can vary.

Toenail reconstruction is similar to gel nails in the way that gel is layered and then hardened under UV light in a salon. However, the gel used for nail reconstruction is different. A reconstructed nail is designed to look like a natural nail and is known as a prosthetic nail. The gel used is flexible, allowing the toenail to move with the toe during gait while the gel used in salons for fingernails is hard.

Diseased or damaged nails cannot be removed by a beautician. A podiatrist can remove the damaged or infected nail prior to constructing the prosthetic nail. Toenail reconstruction will not damage the natural nail or restrict growth and allows the natural nail to grow beneath the reconstructed nail.

‣ A medical history will be taken to ensure there are no contraindications. 
‣ The area to be treated will be cleansed using clinisept.
‣ Any thickened, damaged, loose nail will be reduced using a podiatry drill.
‣ The nail base is then cleaned with a special solution to dehydrate the area to enhance the bonding of the gel to the nail base.
‣ The gel will then be applied in layers until desired nail shape has been created.
‣ The reconstruction is then shaped and filed

Toenail reconstruction is carried out using a non-touch aseptic technique to ensure gold standard infection control and hygiene standards. The nail may then be painted or gel polished at home or in a beauty salon. The nail should be treated as you would treat a natural nail. Nail varnish remover may be used as long as it is acetone free.

Toenail reconstruction is suitable for men and women who have fungal nails, psoriatic nails, discoloured nails, thick nails, and nails that have had previous surgery only part of the nail is left.
